JOB DESCRIPTION

The WASH Project Coordinator will work together with and advise the Multiple Core Competency Project Manager (MCC PM). Area Manager, WASH Specialist on various technical issues regarding the general performance of the Water supply, (Quantity and Quality), Sanitation and Hygiene promotion interventions. The WASH Project Coordinator will prepare technical and project reports (narrative and financial) at intervals that will be specified by Multi CC Project Manager.

The WASH Project Coordinator takes lead in introducing/applying innovative WASH solutions, adopting approaches to doing WASH that will lead to sustainability in provision of WASH services in the camp and host community and in creating linkages with county government, development actors, private enterprises, health partners, water service providers and local authorities in providing innovative and sustainable solution to WASH needs and challenges in the area of operation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and management of NRC WASH projects in Turkana implemented through an integrated approach within NRC or in partnership with other actors.
  • Lead and coordinate NRC WASH interventions in Turkana implemented through partnerships with local organizations, refugee-led organizations (RLOs), private sector, social enterprises, county government and NGOs. 
  • Do a mapping of WASH actors in Turkana and identify WASH actors for potential partnerships in ways that are complementary and add value to the work of NRC and that of the partner.
  • Through and with our partner organizations, regularly undertake an analysis of WASH needs/gaps in the area of operation and translate these to a response analysis.
  • coordination with the WASH Specialist and partner organization develope concept notes based on evidence for fundraising purposes.
  • Promote sustainable approaches to WASH challenges through MBAs, private sector/social enterprises and linkages with county government.
  • Foster innovation in WASH by adopting new technology or creating links/relationship with private sectors or social enterprises engaged in WASH services.
  • In coordination with support functions (finance, logistics/procurement, grants, compliance, HR) within NRC undertake partners’ capacity assessment to determine area of strength we can leverage on and areas for improvement we can work with each partner to deliver projects that relevant, of quality, safe and cost-efficient. 
  • Create linkages with private sectors, social enterprises, county government, development agencies, local CBOs for the provision of innovative, efficient, affordable and sustainable WASH services in Turkana West.
  • Play a key role in developing concept notes, proposals and report writing.
  • Responsible for monitoring project budgets to ensure spending is in line with workplans, donor instalments plan and allocated budget.
  • Represent NRC at relevant Kakuma Area WASH working groups and other coordination meetings.
  • Develop any required rapid response and contingency plans related to WASH.
  • Liaison with WASH Specialist on technical issues related to the WASH project in Kakuma
  • Coordinate and network with UNHCR WASH sector, Linkages with other WASH partners within the camp, participate in WASH/HEALTH coordination meeting and update the MCC PM accordingly
  • Accomplish any other reasonable tasks as assigned by your line manager or other senior staff members.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least two years of experience in managing large scale WASH intervention in humanitarian and/or development contexts.
  • Experience in managing transition from emergency to long-term sustainable WASH interventions
  • Bachelor’s degree in water, Public Health or any other relevant discipline
  • Keen interest in building capacity and empowering local groups and in innovative and sustainable ways of working.
  • Results oriented Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Knowledge about own manager skills/profile
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal

Context related skills, knowledge and experience

  • Skills and training in hydrology, ground water development, pipeline design, emergency water supply and participatory sanitation and hygiene promotion approaches, sanitation infrastructure innovative approaches.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work
  • Keen interest in working through partnerships
  • Works well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to resolve individual and group conflicts
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity
