Role Purpose Statement

As a Project Operations intern, you will play a key role in supporting the efficient and effective coordination of various functions in the Research and Advisory Division from within the Project Operations Team. You will work closely with the Project Operations Coordinator to support and improve systems and processes for the Research and Advisory (RA) Division, including project management practices and knowledge management systems. This position requires a high level of organization and coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across different teams.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities: Research and Advisory Division Support

• Support the smooth running of key project management exercises, in particular project kick-off and closure sessions, as well as the introduction of improvements to these to achieve high levels of project delivery quality.
• Help improve compliance with knowledge management practices by monitoring usages of key systems, such as Google Drive and Box, and supporting the roll-out of interventions to embed good practices.
• Monitor and improve compliance rates with monthly timesheet completion on the Resource Management system.
• Support the administration, tracking, monitoring, and review of RA Division subscriptions, such as Qualtrics, Survey CTO, Nvivo, and Grammarly.
• Assist members of the RA Division with project sub-contracting processes, facilitating a high-level of quality and compliance with internal policies.
• Schedule and provide administrative support to the running of key divisional meetings, including updating calendars, sharing reminders, reviewing agendas and content, and supporting necessary meeting follow-ups.

Project Operations Team Administration:

• Support the monitoring of progress against key Project Operations tasks and activities.
• Maintain clean and well-organized Project Operations documentation and folders, ensuring a high level of compliance with internal knowledge management practices.
• Manage the Team’s meeting schedule, including both internal, org, and external meetings.
• Coordinate necessary logistics for Project Operations meetings, events, and other relevant activities.
• Support the submission of team payment and travel requests.
• Support the Project Operations staff on any other required tasks to ensure the smooth running and efficiency of the Team.

Role summary

The insurance portfolio contributes to building resilience in low-income communities and underserved segments by crafting innovative insurance solutions rooted in deep behavioral insights. In the short term, we are focused on agriculture and health insurance, to proactively tackle the most urgent impacts of climate change.

The Associate position entails providing technical expertise in experimental design. We are searching for a candidate who has experience running behavioral experiments and games in a lab setting, such as the Busara Lab. As Busara Lab is a shared service, the successful candidate will require experience managing and collaborating across functions. This is a critical requirement for the role. Furthermore, possessing qualitative skills is an additional benefit.

About the role:

The Associate supports both the advisory and research arms of Busara by leading the planning, execution, and day to day management of Busara projects.

As primary project manager for all external Busara projects, an Associate quickly gains an expert understanding of a particular problem or research question and uses all tools at their disposal, both within and outside Busara to execute an engagement to the highest possible degree, with careful consideration of timing and budget. An Associate develops creative and rigorous solutions to client and partner needs and manages both internal and external relationships with energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism. 

Associates directly manage other project staff that work on their project and, as well as liaise with other Busara teams and are expected to coordinate and manage staff effectively.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

CORE PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Serve as a point of contact for clients and partners.  Effectively manage the needs of stakeholders through proactive communication and troubleshooting.

The Analyst role will require proficiency in data communication, with the ability to transform complex datasets into compelling narratives. As part of your responsibilities, you will conduct lab studies for game design, utilizing a unique blend of qualitative and quantitative skills. Your expertise in crafting insightful reports and visually engaging presentations will play a crucial role in conveying these nuanced findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, enabling a comprehensive understanding of our research among the wider team.

Role Purpose Statement

The Analyst plays a pivotal role in supporting Busara's advisory arm and will be instrumental in ensuring the delivery of high-quality research and advisory services, contributing to Busara's mission and goals by aiding in strategic decision-making and prioritizing projects effectively. This role involves collaborating with senior staff on various projects and client engagements, contributing through both qualitative and quantitative research activities. Analysts will be tasked with supporting the structuring and composing of reports, client deliverables, and analysis on ongoing projects, in close coordination with the Associates and Engagement Directors. The role holder requires a blend of technical expertise, project management acumen, and the ability to coordinate and communicate effectively across various teams and contributors.

Analysts will work closely with Project leads to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

CORE PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve inquiries on external and internal research data and act as a research resource person for senior leadership, internal teams, staff, and external parties.
• Work closely, when necessary, with the data and programming team to source, clean, and structure data.
• Support the design of effective quantitative and qualitative survey instruments and coordinate all activities associated with survey development including research, formatting, liaising with survey programming teams, analyzing, summarizing, and presenting results; write reports highlighting key findings and present results.
• Support Associates/Senior Associates in preparing materials such as, but not limited to, drafts of client reports, experimental designs, literature reviews, proposals, and pitch decks.
• Support multiple large-scale research and advisory projects at a given time as may be required.
• Clarify research requests to identify potential data sources and informational resources; identify, and discuss research needs with Associates and Engagement Directors.
• Carry out general logistics planning for project activities as it relates to content outcomes such as phasing of field activities, coordinating meetings, etc.  Work closely with the Project Operations team and the Project Lead team to plan logistics for field operations, data collection, and data quality assurance.  
• Ensure that all project coordination work is communicated with the relevant teams at Busara to ensure proper roll-out of the engagement.  This includes, but is not limited to, finance, procurement, operations, facilities, and wellness.
• Perform any other duty as may be assigned by the project supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

Role Purpose Statement:

• The Senior Associate supports both the advisory and research arms of Busara by leading the execution of Busara projects. While the role will mainly involve research and advisory in insurance, they may be expected to contribute to other portfolios.
• As the primary project manager and technical lead for all external Busara projects, a Senior Associate quickly gains an expert understanding of the project, challenges, relationships, and research questions and uses best practices and tools, both within and outside Busara to execute to the highest degree, with careful consideration of timelines and budget. They view research problems with a behavioural lens and have good intuition about potential barriers and levers, while drawing on problem-specific and general behavioral science knowledge.
• The Senior Associate works directly with clients and partners and takes ownership of the overall project and its end products. The Senior Associate directly manages and effectively coordinates other project staff that work on their project as well as liaise with other Busara teams. This includes strong upward management skills to engage the Project Division’s vice presidents on substantive components of the project.
• The Senior Associate works closely with Busara leaders and directly with researchers, clients and partners to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to:

Research Design and Execution

• Design high-quality qualitative, quantitative or experimental research, which takes into account key sampling, instrument, research integrity and ethics, analysis and interventions considerations on a variety of internal and external projects
• Incorporate behavioral science into research projects.

Project Oversight and Leadership:

• Manage the most sensitive or complex projects, typically of medium to large-scale research and advisory projects, end to end, with minimal supervision or support

About the role:

• At Busara, we work on some of the most pertinent challenges faced by vulnerable populations in the Global South from a behavioral lens. Our work covers Health, Financial Inclusion, Agriculture, Climate Change and much more. The Technical Vertical at Busara works across these impact areas to bring methodological rigor and expertise to our work.  
• As part of the Technical Vertical, the Senior Analyst will get the opportunity to explore different areas of applied research in the development sector. You will be exposed to the full range of basic and advanced methodologies. You will function as a thought leader on the technical aspects across projects, guiding other team members on quantitative research methods and best practices.
• The Senior Analyst (TV) will be expected to have accurate knowledge of the research process (experiment design, outcome selection etc.) as well as common research methods (field experiments, RCTs etc.) that are useful in supporting project delivery from a technical perspective. You will engage in a variety of quantitative research activities and will be required to support research preparation. structuring, and ultimately composing reports, deliverables, and analysis on ongoing projects, in close coordination with Associates. You will also be responsible for sensitive and delicate client interactions, and final project outputs, requiring extreme attention to detail and dedication to high-quality outputs.

About The Internship

• As an intern for Busara team you will get the chance to dive headfirst into the world of behavioral science and get firsthand experience working on projects in the development space alongside your mentors. This is not your coffee-grabbing internship! Interns are tasked with supporting the research, composing reports, client deliverables, and analysis on ongoing projects, in close coordination with Analysts, Associates and Engagement Directors, thus exposing them to all sides of research.
• This is a full time internship for 10-12 weeks.

• Support in design and development of research and advisory projects focused on using behavioral science to alleviate global poverty

About the Role:

• The role holder, internally referred to as the Voice and Impact Officer, supports the Voice and Impact (V&I) function of Busara by informing decision-making on V&I activities planning and execution and maintaining the Busara website. 
• The V&I Officer will be expected to understand the voice and impact strategy and its needs, and contribute to the design of V&I activities, such as outputs, engagements and internal monitoring of activities and impact.  The V&I Officer will have deep and constantly updated knowledge of the changing media, voice and impact landscape, updated information on Busara Projects and be able to guide activities in the face of changes.  The V& I officer will serve as the Busara webmaster in charge of maintaining Busara’s web presence. In addition, the Officer shall provide operational and logistical support to all voice and impact activities and support liaising across divisions, with a particular emphasis on relationships between V&I , People Team and the Research & Advisory division (particularly the qual and design team), acting as a Traffic Coordinator. The Officer will directly support the VP Voice and Impact in planning and execution of the VP’s activities. The Officer should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The Voice and Impact Officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Stakeholder and Project Engagement

• Maintain an understanding of the high-level engagement, the goals of the clients, partners, and teams within Busara.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve inquiries on external and internal voice and impact activities, acting as a resource person for senior leadership, internal teams, and external parties.
• Work on a variety of voice and impact activities while maintaining a strong understanding of Busara’s work across projects, including those without directly planned voice activities.
• Be responsible for the coordination of the V&I team  and successful end-to-end delivery of voice and impact outputs.
• Support the Online Community Officer, Manager Voice and Impact, and VP Voice and Impact in building and managing constructive relationships with key stakeholders.

Operational and Administrative Support

• Act as contact hub for scheduling, idea collection stage and outreach requests before allocating appropriate resources, such as editorial time.
• Maintain and update the Voice output calendar, addressing potential bottlenecks.
• Provide logistical support to all voice and impact activities.  Work closely with the relevant  team to coordinate planning and execution of all activities. Keep minutes/ action points and maintain an updated agenda for all V&I meetings. 
• Act as main liaison in project setup and closure procedures to enhance voice and impact opportunities.
• Track V& I KPIs. Compile records on social media engagement in collaboration with Online Community Officer. 
• Website upkeep: conduct regular reviews of website functionality and relevance and alert to the need for major revision, update website weekly with latest output, liaise with the software team in case of website malfunctions. 
• Maintain an up-to-date record of all Busara outputs. 
• Responsible for keeping updated voice and impact running budget. Handle any necessary payments (with the Finance team) and coordinate procurement with relevant Operations teams.
• Complete administrative tasks related to voice and impact

Team Collaboration and Coordination

• Coordinate the V&I team for the successful delivery of voice and impact outputs.
• Collaborate with the Online Community Officer, Manager Voice and Impact, and VP Voice and Impact to  maintain uninterrupted voice and impact activities. Address and escalate any issues that may hinder progress or quality. 
• Work closely with all relevant teams across Busara to schedule voice and impact activities and to optimize Busara organizational resources.

About the Role:
The Voice and Impact Officer supports the Voice and Impact (V&I) function of Busara by informing decision-making on V&I activities planning and execution and maintaining the Busara website.

• The V&I Officer is expected to understand the voice and impact strategy and its needs, and contribute to the design of V&I activities, such as outputs, engagements and internal monitoring of activities and impact. The V&I Officer will have deep and constantly updated knowledge of the changing media, voice and impact landscape, updated information on Busara Projects and be able to guide activities in the face of changes. The V& I officer will serve as the Busara webmaster in charge of maintaining Busara’s web presence. In addition, the Officer shall provide operational and logistical support to all voice and impact activities and support liaising across divisions, with a particular emphasis on relationships between V&I , People Team and the Research & Advisory division (particularly the qual and design team), acting as a Traffic Coordinator. The Officer will directly support the VP Voice and Impact in planning and execution of the VP’s activities. The Officer should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The Voice and Impact Officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Stakeholder and Project Engagement

• Maintain an understanding of the high-level engagement, the goals of the clients, partners, and teams within Busara
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve inquiries on external and internal voice and impact activities, acting as a resource person for senior leadership, internal teams, and external parties
• Work on a variety of voice and impact activities while maintaining a strong understanding of Busara’s work across projects, including those without directly planned voice activities
• Be responsible for the coordination of the V&I team and successful end-to-end delivery of voice and impact outputs
• Support the Online Community Officer, Manager Voice and Impact, and VP Voice and Impact in building and managing constructive relationships with key stakeholders

Operational and Administrative Support

• Act as contact hub for scheduling, idea collection stage and outreach requests before allocating appropriate resources, such as editorial time
• Maintain and update the Voice output calendar, addressing potential bottlenecks
• Provide logistical support to all voice and impact activities. Work closely with the relevant team to coordinate planning and execution of all activities. Keep minutes/ action points and maintain an updated agenda for all V&I meetings.
• Act as main liaison in project setup and closure procedures to enhance voice and impact opportunities
• Track V& I KPIs. Compile records on social media engagement in collaboration with Online Community Officer.
• Website upkeep: conduct regular reviews of website functionality and relevance and alert to the need for major revision, update website weekly with latest output, liaise with the software team in case of website malfunctions.
• Maintain an up-to-date record of all Busara outputs.
• Responsible for keeping updated voice and impact running budget. Handle any necessary payments (with the Finance team) and coordinate procurement with relevant Operations teams
• Complete administrative tasks related to voice and impact

Team Collaboration and Coordination

• Coordinate the V&I team for the successful delivery of voice and impact outputs
• Collaborate with the Online Community Officer, Manager Voice and Impact, and VP Voice and Impact to maintain uninterrupted voice and impact activities. Address and escalate any issues that may hinder progress or quality.
• Work closely with all relevant teams across Busara to schedule voice and impact activities and to optimize Busara organizational resources

About the Internship

• As an intern for Busara's Research and Advisory team you will get the chance to dive headfirst into the world of behavioral science and get firsthand experience working on projects in the development space alongside your mentors. This is not your coffee-grabbing internship! Interns are tasked with supporting the research, composing reports, client deliverables, and analysis on ongoing projects, in close coordination with Analysts, Associates and Engagement Directors, thus exposing them to all sides of research.
• This is a full time internship for 10-12 weeks. 

Who are we looking for?

• Students in their third year or fourth year of undergraduate studies, students in masters programs, and recent graduates who have completed their course within the last 6 months.
• Students preferably based out of Nairobi, since the internship will likely entail some fieldwork. 
• Busara loves diversity of thought and we will accept applicants from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds – psychology, sociology, economics, public policy, political science, neuroscience, statistics, marketing and so on.
• Interest in qualitative and quantitative research and familiarity with data analysis (Excel, Stata, R and/or other programming languages)
• Fluency and excellent communication and writing skills with a mastery of English and Swahili
• Hunger to learn, high level of self-motivation and energy, and an optimistic “can-do” attitude
• Flexible and comfortable with ambiguity
