POSITION / ROLE SUMMARY

• This position reports to the Global Director of Finance and Administration, has a dotted reporting line to the Global Director of Programs and is based in Kenya, however has a global remit and supports all subgrantees and partners around the world. 

SUMMARY OF POSITION FUNCTION:

• The Global Subgrants and Partnerships Coordinator will serve as a key support role related to the administering of subgrants at Equality Now. Specifically, s/he will provide day-to-day support of subgrants administration, performing the assessment of partners, drafting subgrant agreements/amendments and spend monitoring. The position will be a resource for staff as it relates to compliance issues and questions in connection with donor regulations and subgrant agreements and should have experience and familiarity with the rules and regulations of donor requirements relating to the particular subgrantee or partner.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Actively participate in the development of subgrant portion of the grant proposals, assess budget allocation for the subgrantees and participate in all meetings relating to the initial partner outreach, set-up subgrant agreements, once grant is approved, and monitor partner expenses as well as coordinating on partner performance with the assigned programmatic staff from the start of the grant to its close throughout the grant life-cycle
• Conduct pre-award due diligence assessment of current and potential partners, and analyze organizational capacity to manage subgrant funding and project implementation for all subgrantees
• Based on standard templates, lead drafting of subgrant agreements and amendments working directly with appropriate program staff ensuring related forms are current with respect to Equality Now’s and donor compliance requirements
• Participate in Go/No Go process for grant applications that include subgranting to ensure subgrant related needs are captured and future steps outlined with the program and development staff pre-award and post-award 
• Work with Global Budgets and Reporting Manager to ensure subgrant budgets are properly incorporated in the individual grant budgets as well as organization-wide budgets and are aligned with the reporting requirements of the donor
• Implement, update and maintain subgrantee database and produce reporting as required
• Create and maintain subgrantee database in WizeHive to ensure proper internal controls are implemented in the life cycle of subgrants
• Draft memos and guidance documents and act as a resource for program staff for all compliance-related issues pertaining to subgrants
• Working with program staff, ensure subgrant payments are made in accordance with subgrant agreements ensuring the relevant due diligence backup has been completed
• Lead all anti-terrorism compliance checks of partners and ensure accurate tracking of all such requests and documentation within subgrant database
• Ensure timely internal review, monitoring and clearance of all financial documentation and reporting associated with subgrants, in coordination with Accounting Managers and/or Global Director of Finance and Administration  
• Provide analysis of the status on current and closed subgrants, e.g. spending patterns, outstanding reports and other ad hoc reports
• Work with subgrantees on close out, e.g. documentation, distribution of inventory, retention of intellectual property, audit, etc.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Global Director of Finance and Administration and Director of Programs

SPECIAL PROJECT 1 Finetune a subgrantee database and processes involving subgranting 

• In 2024, audit all organizational subgrants for all active grants
• Ensure that all relevant due diligence backup for each subgrantee have been uploaded into the database
• Develop a checklist of all necessary data and ensure all audited subgrantees have provided this information to the organization
• Ensure the portal is fully functional and develop reports to support the reporting needs of the organization 

SPECIAL PROJECT 1 Develop subgrantee toolkit

• Compile templates of useful organizational policies and best practice processes for those subgrantees that might have the need for these

• The Global Institutional Giving Officer will help to grow and diversify the institutional funding for Equality Now across Africa, the Americas, the MENA region and Asia. Reporting to the Global Institutional Partnerships Manager, the post holder will serve as an integral member of the Development team, and help Equality Now achieve its mission by increasing funding from foundations, as well as bilateral and multilateral agencies.
• The position will work in close collaboration with the Program, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Finance Teams. The role requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to synthesize technical details into a compelling narrative, a respectful and team-oriented working style, and a talent for understanding and responding to donors’ interests.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Independently manage a portfolio of funders, including ongoing stewardship of existing grants and renewals.
• Support all aspects of the grant management process including timely submission of reports and other required grant deliverables, contract management and donor liaising;
• Coordinate proposal design and reporting processes involving staff from different departments to comply with donor requirements;
• Act as a primary point of contact and/or support relevant program staff in maintaining timely and effective communication with donors and prospects;
• Work with colleagues throughout the organization to develop funding opportunities, program overviews and impact updates for donors, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• Passion for social justice issues, particularly women’s and girls’ rights, gender equality, diversity and inclusion; understanding of the law is a bonus;
• Minimum of five years of experience in grant writing, research and analysis of donor trends, and institutional funding;
• Experience working on complex, multi-year, grants with institutional donors, including governments, multilaterals, and private foundations;
• Experience in frontline fundraising with institutional donors; experience of working with regions and/or countries beyond Africa is desirable; 
• Written and spoken fluency in English (fluency in Arabic, Spanish and/or French is a bonus);

POSITION / ROLE SUMMARY

• Equality Now is offering a great opportunity for someone to take up a Regional Communications Officer role with our Communications Team in the Africa Regional Office.  The Regional Communications Officer, who should have all-around solid advocacy communication skills, will be able to write and converse fluently in English language skills and a can-do collaborative attitude to challenges and opportunities. This opportunity will require the person to have a flexible approach to working hours, connect with the broader global communications team, respond to reactive communications needs, and be available to travel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reporting to the Regional Communications Manager for Africa & MENA, the Regional Communications Officer- Africa, as part of Equality Now’s Global Communication team and working directly with the Africa program teams, will undertake the following tasks:

Global Communications:

• Collaborate with program teams and partners on specific campaign initiatives at regional and global level.
• Amplify the work of national and international partners via Equality Now global channels.
• Identify and produce well-written, factually accurate, and risk-sensitive copy for use in multi-channel communications outputs globally.
• Respond to inbound international media or event requests relating to the EN’s role in various regionally focused campaigns.
• Lead in the development and dissemination of key messaging and calls to action into communications output and oversee appropriate sign-off.
• Spearhead brand visibility, placement and coordination in campaign focused events.
•  Report on impact, performance and milestones in relation to the communications objectives identified. 
• Ensure Africa campaign work is represented in Equality Now’s global editorial calendar by participating in regular meetings with the global team.

Regional Communications:

• As a communications resource, work collaboratively with the programs team to implement a work plan with KPIs that aligns with the regional communications strategy.
• Lead in the production of multi-channel communications strategies in relation to thematic campaigns in the region including Ending Harmful Practices, Ending Sexual Violence, Ending Sexual Exploitation and Legal Equality as assigned. 
• Identify and spearhead partnership opportunities with the media, influencers and other key players with a mission to advance communications objectives. 
• In conjunction with the Programs and the Communications team, lead in the creation and oversight of workplans for strategic communications activities that proactively raise awareness of the issues that profile our advocacy work in the region. 
• Gather engaging case studies for communications output; conduct interviews, including with those who are extremely vulnerable, employing the utmost professionalism and sensitivity; with informed consent. 
• Organize, create content for and support the delivery of identified initiatives targeting local CSOs partners and/or media practitioners.
• Create content/events for social media, presentations, print-based items, events, and press media.
• Support the production of publications, content, and design.
• Work together with the programs team in the population of reports in line with donor priorities.
• Regional travel may be required. 

Media Relations:

• Establish and manage media relations in the Africa region.
• Leverage media coverage and digital channels as advocacy tools to increase understanding of campaign issues; build brand awareness about EN work in Africa and generate positive media coverage featuring EN campaigns.
• Maximize media opportunities and secure positive media coverage for EN by working with the global media team to proactively pitching ideas to national, regional, and international media; respond in a timely and effective way to incoming media inquiries; work with communications and program teams to provide expert comment. Expand our network of media contacts, including journalists, news editors, and influencers reporting in and on the region.
• Write op-eds and press releases, and lead in placing them in the media- national, regional and international platforms. 
• Contribute to editorial planning in the medium and short term. 

Digital Communications:

• Creative development of high-impact social media strategies in line with various digital campaigns in the region.
• Work closely with the digital team in overseeing content production and representation in EN’s digital platforms including the website and social media channels.
• Plan virtual events including webinars, virtual launches, Twitter chats and Twitter spaces.
• Develop social media toolkits, social media planners, and design digital collateral for use by partner organizations and key stakeholders.
• Lead in online movement building for the region and curate participatory social media initiatives in line with programmatic objectives.

Event Planning:

• Support in organizing various thematic events, workshops, openings, presentations, seminars, conferences, hackathons, flash mobs and other events.
• Lead in media mobilization during these events and coordinate the development and dissemination of press packs.
• Develop and execute effective post-event engagement strategies with key stakeholders including highlight emails, newsletters, social media toolkits, and interactive photo galleries as required.
• Actively engage in extensive communication with stakeholders through online media, phone calls and face-to-face meetings. Prepare meeting highlights and keep track of program-related meeting lists.
• Assist in development of the Terms of References (ToRs) for outsourced services, as well as maintain regular communication with the relevant service provider companies, experts and other stakeholders.
• Handle content development, information dissemination and awareness raising activities through communication with mass media and social media channels on the scope and outcomes of key events (Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Website Blogs etc).
• Regularly update the EN photo gallery with corresponding materials in cooperation with regional communications officers and relevant program leads.

Day to day:

• Media monitoring and identification of opportunities for reactive media opportunities and social media postings relevant to our scope in the Africa region.
• Workplan monitoring.
• Development of key media assets such as photos, and graphics for social media, press releases, pitches, and blogs as needed.
• Sharing media invites and organizing media interviews with Equality Now staff in line with planned activities. This may include assisting with the development of briefing notes and quotes.

• They will work closely with the Africa Regional Director, Africa Regional Representative, Global Campaign Leads, the Regional Communications Manager for Africa and MENA, and other communication team members in other regional hubs to create impactful and compelling communications and advocacy communications interventions.

Position / Role Summary

In order to enhance the application and implementation of the Maputo Protocol, the Associate Program Officer (APO) will support Equality Now and SOAWR’s work and advocacy for the full ratification, domestication, implementation, and accountability of the Maputo Protocol.

Key Responsibilities

Working within the Legal Equality Programme at Equality Now, the APO will support the SOAWR Coalition and its Secretariat (Equality Now) on key initiatives related to its advocacy for the full ratification, domestication, and implementation of the Maputo Protocol, under the “All for Maputo Protocol Initiative”. In this regard, the APO will:

• Support the SOAWR Coalition and its Secretariat in the implementation and monitoring of the SOAWR Strategic Plan (2020-2024) and assist in the collation and review of Members’ annual work plans towards the implementation of the SOAWR 2020-2024 Strategic Plan including working closely with the SOAWR Coalition Secretariat and Steering Committee.
• Support the implementation of the All for Maputo Protocol Initiative by the SOAWR Coalition and track the domestication and implementation of the Maputo Protocol using the Multi-Sectoral Approach (MSA), supporting activities and initiatives geared towards the universal ratification, domestication, and implementation of the Maputo Protocol (“the All for Maputo Protocol Initiative) including providing advocacy and campaigning support, coordinating ratification missions and in-country advocacy in conjunction with the SOAWR Secretariat, Steering Committee and members.
• Support the SOAWR sub-granting process including the development of sub-grant terms of reference/ call for proposals and relevant documents, collating all applications, coordinating proposal review meetings and communication with grantees, and support the management of sub-grants to SOAWR members.
• Develop relevant publications on the All for Maputo Protocol Initiative including but limited to the annual SOAWR journal and newsletter, online journal on the state of the Maputo Protocol as well as an annual publication on the status of implementation of the Maputo Protocol.
• Work closely with the Legal Advisor, Legal Equality and Consultant(s) on the successful development, delivery and rollout of the SOAWR communication strategy and monitor and support its implementation including by popularizing it among members of the SOAWR Coalition.
• Conduct high-quality continental, country-specific, and thematic research that will be used in targeted advocacy across different countries and regions on the Continent.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of high-quality and research-based advocacy strategies for the ratification, domestication, and implementation of the Maputo Protocol in target countries.
• Monitor the human rights and political/ social situation of target countries to inform advocacy strategies for use by the SOAWR Coalition and its Secretariat.
• Provide support to civil society organizations, including SOAWR members, on shadow/alternative reporting on the Maputo Protocol. This responsibility includes coordinating training and capacity enhancement activities, technical support on aspects of shadow reporting as well as support in following up on reporting aftermath (e.g., monitoring concluding remarks by relevant treaty bodies and steps taken by states in response to the shadow report).
• Support assessments, surveys, and audits of initiatives carried out by the SOAWR Coalition and its Secretariat and support the research and development of reports and training materials targeting the public, legal actors, civil society, governments, and treaty bodies. members
• Support the convening of events and meetings related to the overall objective outlined above including capacity strengthening activities, curriculum development, public lectures, moot courts, trainings, SOAWR members meetings, stakeholder meetings, advocacy missions etc, and other day-to-day support to the work of the Legal Equality team at Equality Now’s Nairobi Office.
• Support the content management of the SOAWR website and social media platforms as well as the relevant sections of the Equality Now website.
• Assist the Senior Legal Advisor, Legal Equality in ensuring timely and regular communication between the SOAWR Secretariat, the SOAWR Steering Committee, relevant sub-committees and the membership of the SOAWR Coalition in both English and French.
• Support the Africa Family Law campaign and other LEQ Africa campaigns through research, coordination, and convening of meetings.
• Support litigation projects and monitor and document the outcomes of litigation on the continent with respect to the Maputo Protocol.
• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

• Participate in and contribute to Equality Now staff meetings including relevant thematic groups’ discussions.

As the Communications Coordinator for these two campaigns you will work in a reactive, and adaptable manner and oversee, drive and deliver remarkable communications activity that drives impact. This is a role which needs a true self starter, who can work well with others and requires someone happy with strategy planning and implementation - you will enjoy being hands on and working at pace. This is a great opportunity to build something from the ground up and deliver significant impact through communications. 

You will work closely with Campaign leads from both AUDRi and the Global Campaign for Equality in Family Law – ensuring you are balancing the needs of each campaign. The position will report directly to the Global Communications Director.

Role responsibilities

Strategy/Planning/Monitoring

• Create an annual comms plan for each campaign with achievable KPIs for both campaigns in conjunction with the Campaign Manager and wider Communications team, balancing the need to support their planned work with the ability to respond to reactive opportunities
• Create a supporter journey for both campaigns and create the appropriate content
• Monitor results and deliver a monthly report with recommendations for adaptations to plans based on results

Assets and content

• Lead on the development of the campaign websites, along with uploading SEO optimized content and functionality development new sections, API integration.
• Build on our key messaging, working with the Campaign leads to ensure the campaign has relevant key messages which distil complex information into clear narratives underpinned by evidence-based information. 
• Create marketing assets for each campaign for use online and offline. 
• Ensure brand coherence across coalition activity
• Create and/or curate written content for the website, and social channels, working with coalition resources 

Stakeholder engagement

Create a database/social following

• Research, identify and collect email data of key target audiences for the purposes of landing key information on email and social
• Create lists and audience groups on social channels to target content to and track external events/moments
• Respond to inbound enquiries from email and social 

Champion comms with internal stakeholders: 

• Develop excellent working relationships with key leads from across the organization to help build key stakeholders’ understanding of the campaign communications plans and find opportunities to collaborate
• Ensure coalitions stakeholders are aware of key campaign dates and that they have the information and tools to share with their own networks
• Co-host a regular communications working group with the GCEFL and create quarterly updates on progress for both

Advocacy Communications and Reputation building

• Identify speaking event and exhibition opportunities in line with the annual plan
• Support event planning and delivery, including messaging build and coverage
• Ensure timely delivery of key information on platforms including reports
• Manage all aspects of key communication campaigns across the year in line with the communications strategies for both campaigns - working closely with the campaign managers
• Inspire commentators, thinkers and influencers in each space to champion/talk about AUDRi. 

Media

• Work closely with the coalitions media representatives to build an active and informed network of journalists and spokesperson matrix
• Pitch the coalitions work to target journalists 
• Respond to inbound media requests for the campaigns
• Proactively respond to external media moments, offering comment to journalists or placing commentary on social channels
• Work with the campaign leads and media representatives to identify and place thought pieces (written, audio and visual) to highlight the campaign messaging

Educational qualifications, skills, experience and behaviors

• Educated to degree level or equivalent professional experience 
• Strong experience (5+ years) of leading, planning, delivering and evaluating successful multichannel communications campaigns and other communications projects in the NGO sector, preferably in human rights 
• Experience of delivering activity aimed at politicians, governments, corporations and funders
• Planning and creating content/moments to bring the communications plan to life with operational expertise across the communications mix, especially digital communications and events 
• Good knowledge of data as a foundation of communications 
• Comfortable in creating messaging for multiple audiences and multiple uses including digital, speeches, thought leadership
• Understanding of the role of media and experience of engaging journalists to pitch and place media
• Proactive approach to spotting opportunities for comment in the media and social with a keen eye on global news

POSITION SUMMARY

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Regional Communications Manager for Africa & MENA, the Regional Communications Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

General Communications

Planning

• Help to implement internal and external communications strategies and projects.
• Assist in the development of concept notes, event and content planners for program activities and activities in line with the communications strategy.
• Assist in conducting research and developing products for key message distribution as needed.
• Ahead of partner trainings and launch events, assist in the development of communications and media training plans, invitations, and agendas.
• Assist in the preparation of contractor TORs and contracts on a need’s basis.

Media work 

Planning

• Support in the curation of media and digital plans for key communications activities related to various program objectives.
• Working in tandem with the regional communications team, be the activity coordinator for Africa’s editorial and content calendar.
• Contribute to editorial planning in the medium and short-term.
• Regularly update media contact lists.

Day to day activities

• Take responsibility for responding to inbound in-mail requests for key countries in the region.
• Assist in the development of key media assets such as press releases, pitches, and blogs as needed. 
• Assist in sharing media invites and organizing media interviews with Equality Now staff in line with planned activities. This may include assisting with the development of briefing notes and quotes. 

Digital Communications

• Assist in the creative development of high-impact social media strategies in line with various Africa-led digital campaigns.
• Lead in planning virtual events including webinars, virtual launches, Twitter chats and Twitter spaces.
• Lead in the development of social media toolkits and assist in designing digital collateral for use by partner organizations and key stakeholders.

Case studies

• Assist with logging case studies and other gathered communication content for study reports
• Participate in content gathering trips as needed.

Administrative support

• Ensure the Africa communications work plan is up to date.
• Arrange logistics for stakeholder trainings and events, including media-related travel.
• Lead in the development of a reports and minutes for the communications monthly team meetings 

Essential skills: 

• 1-2 years of working in communications 
• Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
• The ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
• A demonstrable interest in human rights campaigning.
• An interest in communications and external relations
• Demonstrable experience in using social media and digital platforms for communications and advocacy.
• IT literate, with experience using Microsoft Office applications. 
• Ability to undertake research tasks independently.
• Positive attitude, dependable and good sense of humor 
• University degree or equivalent
• Should be creative and innovative. 
• Should be enterprising and solution driven.
• An understanding of and commitment to Equality Now’s work and objectives.  
• Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
• Proficiency in using various social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Desirable: 

• Previous experience writing high-quality copy.
• Previous experience leading social media campaigns and engagements.
• Good understanding of running social media channels.
• Basic graphic design knowledge.
