About the Role

• As a Software Engineer, Backend at Nexleaf you’ll help us achieve scale and impact by serving on a team that designs and develops the core backend code of our cloud-based service. This service collects and analyzes data gathered from the hardest to reach places on Earth and connects to tens of thousands of IoT/M2M devices across the globe. These data and services are accessed by users spanning Ministries of Health, global agencies, partner NGOs, and those working in remote, low connectivity environments.
• To do this you’ll learn the architecture of our system, understand our business and product strategy, and work to improve existing services (and implement new ones), develop APIs, improve our backend architecture, test procedures, and documentation, all with a shared goal of helping the organization achieve its vision! You will also be a key partner alongside our frontend developers, designers and product managers in shaping the user centric product we are continuing to expand and create.

In this role you will:

• Work in a highly collaborative and cross functional capacity with product managers, designers, and other engineers to ensure we are building the right solutions to solve users’ problems.
• Support technical decision making and provide input on design and architecture decisions.
• Make well-reasoned design decisions within your area, identify potential issues, trade-offs, risks, and the appropriate level of abstraction with the support of senior engineers and managers.
• Scope problems with the support of senior engineers and managers, as well as troubleshoot technical and operational problems. Debug expertly within your focus area.
• Build and improve our APIs, data pipelines, and backend systems to follow best practices and align with system goals.
• Work in partnership with our frontend engineers to build out end to end products that provide the results users need.
• Follow and seek to improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes.
• Write maintainable code, develop appropriate tests, and write documentation for your key areas of focus.
• Participate in regular production deployments and write meaningful code reviews for team members.
• We have a robust and professionalized development team, with extensive documentation, well defined processes and a modern stack that includes the latest versions of Python, Django, TypeScript, Angular, and all deployed to AWS. We use code reviews, containerized development environments (Docker), continuous integration, testing, and individual dev / staging environments. We also provide a choice of Linux, Mac or Windows development environments.

Requirements

• BS/MS in Computer Science (or another technical field) or equivalent work experience
• Python: 2+ years of backend software engineering on larger web projects with proficiency with Python or equivalent languages. Candidates with front end development experience in Angular/React/TypeScript will be given extra consideration.
• Django experience is preferred, though experience with similar frameworks such as Flask, Laravel, Ruby on Rails will also be considered.
• Able to participate in technical architecture discussions and provide input to technical decisions alongside other members of your team.
• Self-starter who brings experience, enthusiasm, and can hit the ground running.
• Is excited to work as a participant on a cross functional team and in a highly collaborative and user focused manner.

Your Responsibilities

• Create, fund, execute, and disseminate learnings from projects which advance our internal and external objectives. Donors and international partners are eager to fund projects which will advance the world’s ability to support the vaccine cold chain, as well as support other global health technology. A great IMS director will see the big picture at Nexleaf, understand our vision and strategy, and rally the entire company towards funded projects which support our internal product development and service, support our Ministry of Health customers to turn data insights into good action and policy, as well as shape the market (international organization policies, national priorities, and even RTM device & software standards) to help us achieve the impact we want.
• Lead the process of setting the evidence, learning & design scopes of work for Nexleaf. The Director will pull together the input from the IMS team, product team, customer team, and international stakeholders to identify and implement the most important research and learning initiatives.
• Develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with international organizations, donors, and other service providers, with the aim of shaping the market for high quality data and effective health systems management. Serve as a thought leader among partners and the global health sector, using Nexleaf’s learnings to advocate for systems change.
• Lead the IMS team to success through recruiting, delegation, coaching, and direction-setting. Rather than being the top individual contributor/”doer” in the IMS department, the Director will make sure the right talent and expertise are in place, directed, motivated, and supported to excel at doing the work.
• Support the Research & Data, Vaccine and Medical Equipment Program teams with the design of pilots, research pilots, and evaluations to generate needed evidence for creating systems for effective use of data and technology adoption among Ministry of Health customers.
• Oversee proposal development. Work with Strategic Partnerships & Engagement team as well as Program Managers to identify funding opportunities that match identified proposal concepts and evidence generation needs, and lead them in submitting grant proposals.
• Oversee communications and advocacy. Lead team members to effectively communicate evidence and to develop resources and technical content that can be disseminated via our regional partnerships to support the use of all data products. Leverage Nexleaf’s data in order to publish reports and inform global stakeholders on the state of health systems today
• Represent Impact & Market Shaping on Nexleaf’s Leadership Team, and coordinate efforts between IMS and other department leads to ensure coordination of shared goals and effective feedback loops between field evidence, product development, and customer service delivery.
• Department budgeting and fundraising. Work with the Finance Manager to oversee Department budget allocations, expenditures, and identify fundraising needs.

• A portfolio of case studies, reports, presentations, workshops, thought leadership content, and other communication products sharing the insights and learnings from Nexleaf’s experiences implementing health equipment monitoring technology worldwide that can be used to shape the market and influence global health sector actors.

• 10+ years experience in global public health and/or international development, including:

Scope of Work

The Training Consultant will:

• Participate in a 1-2 day orientation on Nexleaf’s technology to better understand the training needs
• Conduct a desk review on Nexleaf’s existing training materials/methodology and on refresher/continuous training on technology with health workers in low and middle income countries to inform the development of the training methodology and content
• Develop a refresher/continuous training methodology and prototype materials that will be piloted by Nexleaf in Tanzania and Kenya

Deliverables

• Training outline
• Training content in English
• Prototypes and/or storyboards of training media/materials (i.e. videos, posters, slide decks). Note: Nexleaf will hire professional graphic designers/video production services to produce the final materials.

Timeline

The timeline to complete this scope of work is flexible, but ideally the final deliverables will be submitted no later than April 30, 2023.

We are looking for a Director for our Impact & Market Shaping (IMS) department, which generates evidence for how remote temperature monitoring (RTM) and internet of things (IoT) technology leads to better equipment management in healthcare systems. The learnings generated by the IMS Department inform the development of our technology and service models, and help to shape the market for healthcare equipment and data systems around the globe.

The ideal candidate for this role is a strong advocate and analytical thinker who is excited to forge a path for technology and data to positively impact health systems. Sitting on the Leadership Team, this candidate will need to be a problem solver and cross functional collaborator who is energized by working with diverse teams to tackle complex problems and will champion the needs of health systems within a technology company. If you are a leader who is excited about generating learnings and user-driven insights within a complex health system, and testing new models that catalyze use of data within Ministries, this role may be for you!

This role will report directly to the CEO and is fully remote. Some international travel will be required.

Your Responsibilities

• Represent Impact & Market Shaping on Nexleaf’s Leadership Team, serving as a link between the global health sector and our technology business. Bring a big picture understanding of health systems and identify where Nexleaf’s technology and data solutions can have the greatest impact.
• Contribute to Nexleaf’s overall strategic business and organizational development. Interface with Directors and leadership of Product & Innovation and Business Office to ensure coordination of shared goals and effective feedback loops between field evidence, product development, and customer service delivery.

The ideal candidate has a track record of leading diverse business teams and scaling business operations in low- and middle-income countries, as well as leading through and bringing structure to ambiguity. It is essential that s/he demonstrate excellent management skills, business acumen, and an ability to marry the growth of a sustainable business with impact.

As our first COO, you must be willing to roll up your sleeves, build and implement teams, structures and processes, and bring best practices to all areas of our core business. You will be responsible for leading our efforts to strengthen our culture, communication, decision making, and engagement across the organization. This is especially important given that we are a globally distributed and remote organization.

You will be responsible for building a sustainable business around the sale and successful adoption of ColdTrace across Africa and Asia. Doing so will require maintaining an integrated focus on our customers and end users, and designing appropriate solutions that meet their needs, from sales to delivery to customer support.

This role requires a leader who brings a commercial lens to addressing challenges in global health. You are willing to roll up your sleeves, build from scratch where needed, and can bring best practices that span the customer journey. You bring an unwavering commitment to meet Ministry of Health needs across Africa and Asia , but do not need to be a global health expert yourself. Our ideal candidate can bring in sales revenue and customers, while also delivering quality service and establishing processes to address questions, concerns, and feedback as they arise.
