Job Summary:

The Laboratory Data Lead will oversee the development, deployment, and maintenance of the KenPHIA Laboratory System. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in database management and web application development, specifically within large research studies or public health initiatives like the PHIA. This role is critical for ensuring the security, efficiency, and compliance of health data management, particularly concerning sensitive HIV test results.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Development: Spearhead the Laboratory System in AIMS for KenPHIA, focusing on secure data management, process development for sample tracking, and data integrity.
  • Data Security and Compliance: Implement robust systems for data security, including Token IDs for patient anonymity and compliance with data protection regulations.
  • Data Flow Management: Design interfaces and systems to ensure efficient data flow and synchronization across collection points, laboratories, and healthcare facilities.
  • Informatics and Reporting: Develop informatics solutions for data quality monitoring, create automated reporting tools, and design dashboards for real-time monitoring of lab operations.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Lba team to optimize data systems and train staff on informatics tools for improved decision-making and operational efficiency.
  • Technical Support: Support the assessments of labs for KenPHIA and the administration of lab IT infrastructure, ensuring timely routing of instrument data files.

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

Experience:

  • Experience in designing, managing, and working directly with databases from large research studies
  • 4+ years of experience in developing and administering Microsoft SQL Server databases.
  • Proven experience in developing web applications using popular web frameworks.
  • Familiarity with linkage to care processes and support for return of results.
  • Prior experience working with Laboratory information systems (LIS), among other health information systems (HIS) in hospital settings.

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge in RDBMS concepts, data normalization, SQL Server, and T-SQL.
  • Extensive experience in developing ETL processes and writing T-SQL stored procedures, with a focus on query tuning in high-transaction systems.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and oral/written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in resource-limited environments, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, is a significant advantage.

Additional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, health informatics or a related field.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Commitment to data security and privacy best practices.
