The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the UN Migration Agency. With 174 member states it is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society. IOM’s Regional Office for the East and Horn of Africa supports and monitors the following countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Through a team of specialists, the Regional Office supports the development, implementation, monitoring, reporting and evaluation of projects and initiatives undertaken by country offices and regional programmes.

Specifically, the Migration, Environment and Climate Change Division under which this internship is advertised, works to find:

  1. Solutions for people to stay
  2. Solutions for people on the move
  3. Solutions for people to move in a safe, orderly and regular way

…in the context of environmental degradation, natural hazards and climate change.

In a changing climate, where mobility in relation to climate change drivers, is becoming a norm for the youth, and where many parts of East and Horn of Africa are becoming inhabitable or economically unproductive, the perspectives and voices of youth must be raised. In recognition of the important role that youth can, and must play in influencing the perspectives, narratives, and priorities of policy makers on this topic.

In the East and Horn of Africa region IOM has a Youth Strategy 2021 – 2024, based on the IOM strategic tripartite pillars of Resilience (Pillar I), Mobility (Pillar II) and Governance (Pillar 3). The strategy is to support governments in the EHOA to address the challenges to youth welfare and employment in the region and to ensure that migration can bring about positive results in both countries of origin and countries of destination. It also strives to ensure that IOM’s youth interventions in the EHOA are participatory and pursued in a coordinated, coherent, and holistic manner.

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Regional Policy and Programme Coordinator for East and Horn Africa, the direct supervision of the MECC Regional Thematic Specialist and the MECC Programme Officer, the incumbent will carry out the following duties and responsibilities.

  1. Increase visibility of the migration and climate change nexus in preparation for the Africa Climate Action Summit (ACS) and Africa Climate week (ACW), Conference of Youth (COY) and Conference of Parties (COP28) and beyond on different social media platforms, including through young advocates.
  2. Improve knowledge and understanding of, and engagement in climate change induced migration in the EHoA.
  3. Participate in meetings, conferences, training sessions, and events as relevant to the MECC division, such as Africa Continental youth workshop, ACS, ACW, COY and COP28.
  4. Assist in the implementation of the communications and visibility plan of MECC Youth engagement and development of visibility and communication materials and other relevant background documents as they relate to the MECC division.
  5. Support the production of audiovisual, promotional and visibility materials. This may include photos, videos, human interest stories, press briefing notes, key messages, blog posts etc… for dissemination over social and other media and aimed at for donor, partner and community consumption.
  6. Support the production of research and collecting youth inputs as relevant to MECC division.
  7. Stay abreast of the MECC-related issues and challenges posed in East and Horn of Africa, and institutional and humanitarian developments in the area of MECC.
  8. Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Tangible and measurable outputs of the work assignment

  • Provide inputs to Concept Notes related to the planned conferences identified by the MECC team.
  • Participation and representation in at least 4 conferences identified by the MECC team.
  • Notes for files submitted after each conference.
  • Visibility and communication materials published regarding participation of the conferences.
  • At least one production of audiovisual, promotional and visibility materials.
  • Input provided to research products.
  • Proof of youth engagement in MECC in the EHoA region.

Performance indicators for the evaluation of results

  • Develops and promotes effective youth engagement on MECC in the region.
  • Actively supports the organization of the events, and conferences.
  • Promotes IOM MECC work through the participation of the events, and other channels.
  • Timely submission of NFF’s and media products.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • University degree (second university degree or equivalent, Master, or higher) in Environmental Studies; Climate Change; Development; Migration Studies
  • One (1) year experience in Youth engagement
  • Experience in advocacy
  • Knowledge on migration, environment and climate change

SKILLS

  • Ability to work effectively in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills with proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with a diverse team.
  • Self-paced, excellent communication, planning and organizational skills and able to meet tight deadlines, particularly if working remotely.
  • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and consistently according to set deadlines.
  • Mature individual, able to work independently under pressure, able to maintain accuracy, paying attention to details, meeting deadlines and working with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English.

VII. LANGUAGES

Required: Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French or any other UN Official language is advantageous.
