Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:  

  • Advising Management on policies and strategies on breeding and livestock production technologies;
  • Overseeing research into breeding technologies and livestock production technologies;
  • Approving and submitting livestock production reports;
  • Advising on analysis of livestock inputs and products samples;
  • Overseeing the dissemination of livestock breeding, production and management of information;
  • Advising on livestock improvement and multiplication;
  • Ensuring collaboration with other officers in research in breeding and breeding technologies;
  • Representing the organisation in the Genetic advisory committee (GAC);
  • Advising management on all matters related to animal genetics and breeding;
  • Ensuring maintenance of inventory of assets in a livestock production station/farm;
  • Overseeing the formulation, development, implementation, monitoring and review of policies, laws and strategies in research in breeding and breeding technologies;
  • Developing annual work plans and budget for breeding and breeding technologies; and administering performance management systems; and
  • Coaching and mentoring of staff.
  • Working closely with breeders on contract mating scheme and progeny testing.

Job Specification

For appointment to this position one must have:

  • Bachelors degree in Veterinary Medicine/ Livestock production/Animal science or relevant qualifications from a recognized institution;
  • Masters degree in Animal Breeding or its equivalent;
  • Eight (8) years’ work experience and three (3) years in a supervisory role;
  • Management course lasting not less than four (4) weeks;
  • Registered by the relevant professional body;/Member of a relevant body;
  • Have shown ability and demonstrated merit as reflected in work performance and results;
  • Proficiency in computer applications; and
  • Fulfil the requirements of Chapter 6 of the constitution.

  • Should be able to work with minimal supervision and at times at odd hours
