Duties

  • Under the general supervision of the Head of Acquisition Department, the incumbent is the de facto head of the shipping unit (primary point of contact) for the Office, preparing and packing outgoing shipments of library materials to the Library of Congress (LOC) in Washington, DC and more than 30 academic institutional participants in The African Cooperative Acquisitions Program (AfriCAP). Incumbent (1) performs exit checks on all materials received in the Shipping Unit; (2) Prepares packing lists and finalizes boxes of materials for shipping to LC-Washington and AfriCAP participants; (3) Prepares airway bills for inbound and outbound shipments and works with the shipping company to arrange for pickup; (4) Communicates with AfriCAP participants regarding shipment information and prepares any other supporting materials; (5) Procures shipping supplies from the local market as required.
  • Incumbent is also responsible for unpacking and preliminary sorting of inbound shipments of library materials from 30 Suh-Saharan African countries. 

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:  Two years prior experience as a Shipping clerk or technician in a shipping company, library, publishing/distribution house, warehouse, or mailroom is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:  Familiarity with materials packing and shipping operations. Job holder must have good knowledge/understanding of the local laws and procedures for import/export, customs, tax exemption, local logistics and shipping.

Education Requirements:

Mandatory: 

  • Completion of Secondary School is required.

Evaluations:

  • LANGUAGE: English Level II (Basic, reading/writing/speaking) is required. (This may be tested).
  • Kiswahili Level III (Good working Knowledge, reading/writing/speaking) is required.
  • SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Able to distinguish between different types of library materials. Able to use computer software (MS Office, including e-mail). Basic keyboarding skills.
